Ahead of a very important Election Day, the NAACP is doing its best to assure a peaceful polling experience after The Trump administration recently announced it would be deploying 1,000 DOJ election monitors.
The NAACP decided to respond by filing an emergency Temporary Restraining Order in NAACP v Blanche in hopes to block federal law enforcement agents from being included in the deployment.
Little Known Black History Fact: NAACP
“While the DOJ has confirmed that it does not plan to deploy FBI or ICE to polling sites, the Department arbitrarily decided to deploy agents from the Bureau of Prisons (BOP), Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA), and ATF,” writes the organization in a press statement released earlier today. It goes on to state, “All of these entities are law enforcement components that fall under the Department.”
Kristen Clarke, the general counsel for the NAACP, made the argument that law enforcement agents have been known to be intimidating, especially from the perspective of Black voters. “This Justice Department may want us to be afraid, but that’s only because they are afraid of us and the power of our votes,” she says in the statement, urging voters on behalf of the organization to not be afraid to get out and vote. The TRO is a collaborative movement between the NAACP, Advancement Project and Legal Defense Fund.
Voters who come across any issues at the polls are being urged by the NAACP to call 866-OUR-VOTE, where immediate support is available. Also, a report can be filed directly at NAACP.org/vote.
It all falls in line with how the NAACP has been operating across the nation in preparing for the polls, from mobilizing over 6.5 million Black voters across battleground states to hiring more than 52,000 volunteers to engage with infrequent voters in their communities.
Focusing on our advancement is simply all in the name.
