As we’ve come to understand year after year, day after day even death is unfortunately an inevitable part of life. Still, as much of a fact as that may be, the blow of experiencing loss never gets any easier, nor does reporting on the subject in Black culture.

Lynn Hamilton, the celebrated actress best known for her role as Donna Harris on the 1970s sitcom Sanford and Son, passed away on June 19, 2025, at the age of 95. Her death, attributed to natural causes, was announced by her former manager and publicist, Rev. Calvin Carson. Hamilton was surrounded by her grandchildren, loved ones, and caregivers at the time of her passing.

Born in Yazoo City, Mississippi, Hamilton’s illustrious career spanned over five decades. She studied acting at Chicago’s Goodman School of Drama and made her film debut in John Cassavetes’ Shadows in 1959. Her television career included memorable roles in The Waltons, Roots: The Next Generation, and Generations. However, her portrayal of Donna Harris, Fred Sanford’s fiancée, remains her most iconic role.

Hamilton’s career also extended to Broadway, where she appeared in four plays during the late 1950s and early 1960s. She collaborated with her husband, playwright Frank Jenkins, on several productions, showcasing their shared creativity and dedication.

Rev. Carson described Hamilton as a trailblazer whose legacy will continue to inspire future generations. Her dignified presence and remarkable talent left an indelible mark on the entertainment industry, ensuring her memory lives on.
